Listening and Survivors

listen

Survivors want someone to listen to them. They need reassurance that everything will be okay. They want those who care for them to be by their side. They have been through a whole lot these past several weeks. Yet some choose not to listen let alone be compassionate.

Work related it is even more difficult. Yes work can provide financial assistance but not provide the  support means to heal. They are part of a community that has been hit hard with a disaster.  It was a hard to process everything new at work in the first month back after the Joplin Tornado. I know it is going to be hard for those who will be returning.

While survivors are still trying to grasp what has happened to them, and still sometimes struggling to find words to describe what happened it isn’t always easy. The brain is working overtime to help them communicate and get things done.

Yes I do know that Life moves on for everyone else but not at the speed a tornado survivor needs to move at. We live in such a fast paced society that it isn’t funny. We move so fast that we never take the time to care for those in need unless a disaster strikes then we care and move on.

This isn’t what was fully intended for the church. The church is to reach out to those who have been through a disaster or struggling to get back on their feet. Mission Joplin  is one such relief efforts from my church Forest Park in order to help with the relief efforts. Volunteers take the survivors through the store “with no cash register” shopping with them listening to the survivor, and last but not least pray with the survivors who have come through.

God's True Word

We as Christians need to also be listening to God during our quiet times. Listening to him and obeying what he tells us to do. It isn’t always easy but That is what he wants. He wants us to listen and to obey him.

New International Version (NIV)

Listening and Doing

19 My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry,

This is very true for those who have been outside the disaster zone. They need to listen quickly and speak slowly if not. It isn’t a pretty picture. Life in Christ is such a unique responsibility that we need to be displaying it to others, and in a way that glorifies Jesus. This is one way to do it.

As we listen to their stories, and yes if they tell it over and over and over again.
Listen, there may be something in there that God is trying to tell you.

What could God be trying to tell you through their survival story?

What does God need you to work on?
Where in your Life needs to be totally surrendered to God?
What does the Lord need you to do?
What direction is God beginning to Lead you in?
What does He want you to do concerning the Survivors?

What life changing decision do you need to make concerning your Life? Accept Christ?

God made us with ears to hear. What choice we make to listen to them or not listen to the survivors.
Coming from a survivor, listening to us talk and everything is a blessing. Sometimes you can yes question what is going on, but yet we may or may not have all the answers you want hear.
Questions need to be phrased in such a caring perspective, not something that you need and answer right then and there.
To close let me put this question to you.
Do you have your listening ears on when speaking to survivors?
